Our PTA Student Enrichment committee has been hard at work planning and executing activities that coordinate with what our students have been studying in class.  On November 17, Mrs. Chumley’s and Mrs. Haley’s third grade classes had a visit from a few “Mad Scientists.”  The Mad Scientists are Jan Divelbiss (Student Enrichment Chairperson) and her mother, Mrs. Reeder.  Students had the opportunity to dissect owl pellets and they were amazed with what they found inside.  They were a little hesitant to “dig in” but once they started discovering bird and rodent skulls, the students were fearless.  Students recorded what they found, graphed the information and then shared their favorite discovery.

Second grade had their fun day of learning on November 18.  The Mad Scientists presented Simple Machines and Energy.   Students built machines from Lego kits and observed how they made work easier.  They finished off the activities with learning about energy by catapulting marshmallows.

These activities made learning fun.  PTA Student Enrichment hopes to offer more programs during this school year.  If you are a parent and want to volunteer or a teacher who would like a visit from our Mad Scientists, contact Jan Divelbiss at inschoolenrichment@duewestpta.com.

We celebrated with all of our Reflections participants on Oct 23.   One of our Due West moms, Heather Lowery (Massive Sweets 770-528-0658) made the beautiful WOW! cake for us.

On Oct. 29 we had a visit from Sgt. Ken Davis, Lt. Vince Hester and Blue.  Sgt. Ken shared the history of Red Ribbon Week and how students can know the difference between “good” and “bad” drugs.  Lt. Vince and his partner Blue demonstrated how Blue can find drugs.  The students seemed to be fascinated with Blue and lots of good questions.  Check out the slide show and video clip.

For our first Box Tops contest we had almost 100% class participation.  Ms. Folwer’s class took 1st place (640 Box Tops), Mrs. Davis’ class in 2nd place (530 Box Tops) and Mrs. Haley’s class in 3rd place (400 Box Tops). 

On October 10 the classes were rewarded by our Box Top committee.  Mrs. Fowler’s class received cupcakes and Mrs. Davis’ class received popcicles.  There wasn’t a reward planned for 3rd place, but Mrs. Haley’s class made such a great effort that they received a popsicle party too.

Our next Box Tops contest will be announced soon.  So keep on clipping!
